Sue Pettigrew has steered St Michael's to its current position as an organisation with the highest reputation turning around the lives of disadvantaged families, improving the life chances of children and Preferred Provider to Lambeth. She was awarded an OBE in 2016 for services to Children and Families.
Sue ran the first of St Michael’s Fellowship's residential houses for teenage mothers for 13 years and was appointed Director in 1988. She led the creation of our community-based family assessment service, and championed the needs of teenage parents. More recently, she has campaigned for young fathers as a marginalised group in need of services.
She was part of the reference group establishing the first National Minimum Standards for Residential Family Assessment Centres and a member of the working group 2013 to update standards regulated by Ofsted; is a member of the steering groups of MsUnderstood boys and young men project and Leeds University's Following Young Fathers project; member of Fatherhood APPG; chair of Lambeth's VCS Forum; a board member of Lambeth's LEAP partnership.
For eight years she chaired the National Consortium of Residential Family Assessment Centres, is a former trustee of Children England and Vice Chair of Radicle, providing practical and emotional support services for isolated and vulnerable people across three London Boroughs.
Mick Stephens (Deputy Director)
Mick Stephens has a background in social work for children and families and has worked for St Michael’s over 20 years.
He has worked in a number of specialist areas, including substance misuse and adolescent parenting, and has taught social work theory and practice for many years.
Mick was appointed Deputy Directorin 2003 and directs the family assessment programme.
Mick was a member of the influential Third Sector Workforce Development Task Force and a representative for the Third Sector on the Government’s Social Work Reform Board sub-groups and the Careers Working Group, as part of a comprehensive audit and reform of the Social Work profession.
